Greenpeace calls attention to dangers posed by coal-ash dumpsites in Cebu

Six days before the Copenhanen Climate talks, Greenpeace activists calling attention to hazards posed by coal-fired power plants found that hazmat suits may not be enough protection. Clad in protective suits against hazardous materials, the peaceful activists, seeking only to take pictures of the toxic by-product, were aimed at and met with warning gunshots by security guards of the coal ash dumpsite in Barangay Tinaan in Naga, Cebu. Greenpeace calls on Indonesian government to arrest forest destroyers instead of harassing climate defenders

Greenpeace today marched to the Indonesian Embassy to call on its government to fully shut down operations of paper giant Asia Pacific Resources International Holding Limited (APRIL) and other companies destroying the carbon-rich peatlands of Indonesia’s Kampar Peninsula in Sumatra. The group, rallying behind a banner that said “stop forest destroyers, not climate defenders”, delivered a letter addressed to Ambassador Irzan Tandjung. Greenpeace is denouncing the unfounded arrest, interrogation and deportation of journalists and Greenpeace activists trying to bring attention to the forest crimes being committed by APRIL. Makati City, civil society orgs band together to urge US government to set example vs. climate change

An unprecedented global alliance of civil society organizations, trade unions, faith groups and other organizations concerned with climate change, today made its local presence known by mounting, together with the City of Makati, a bike tour for the climate. The tour ended at the US Embassy, in a symbolic bid to pressure the US to take the lead in signing a global deal during the Climate Change Summit this December, in Copenhagen, Denmark. The US, considered the highest carbon emitter in history, is expected to set an example for other countries in committing to substantial reductions in carbon emissions, and to set up a global fund for climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Time is running out to stop climate change

More than a hundred bikers toured Iloilo today to launch the “yoU-Turn the Earth” campaign, marking the 100-day countdown to the Climate Change Summit in Copenhagen, where governments will agree on a deal to combat Climate Change. Greenpeace is asking developed nations to commit to substantial carbon emissions reductions and to set up a climate change mitigation fund for countries like the Philippines that are most vulnerable, least prepared. Greenpeace: Clean Production needed to rehabilitate Manila Bay

Greenpeace is recommending that government pursue Clean Production, and not just tackle the most obvious problems, if it is sincere in its efforts to rehabilitate Manila Bay. Greenpeace reiterated that a large part of issues like solid waste and raw sewage will be addressed if root causes are dealt with.
