Ifugao Rice Terraces declared GMO-Free Zone

The iconic Philippine Rice Terraces in Ifugao Province, a UNESCO Living Cultural Heritage site, was declared a genetically-modified organism (GMO)-Free zone. The historic declaration, which is in line with the province’s commitment to preserve the integrity of the country’s most enduring cultural symbol, was enacted by Ifugao Governor Hon. Teodoro Baguilat Jr. and Banaue Mayor Hon. Lino Madchiw, with the support of Greenpeace Southeast Asia.

Greenpeace Statement on the hearing at the House Committee on Appropriations on the House Bill to revive the BNPP

Greenpeace Southeast Asia Campaigns Manager for the Philippines Beau Baconguis said:
“The ongoing debate on the House bill mandating the revival of the mothballed Bataan Nuclear Power Plant which continue to drag on in the House Committee on Appropriations just goes to show that Mark Cojuangco’s sordid nuclear proposal is clearly unsound and should not have been considered in the first place. Every single study conducted on the BNPP has concluded that this nuclear facility is unsafe to operate. There is no judicious reason why Congress should continue to hear this pointless proposal.

BNPP to count among world’s most dangerous nuclear plants if operated

The outdated, light water Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP) will count among the world’s most dangerous nuclear power plants if operated, Greenpeace revealed in a press conference in Quezon City today. In a talk entitled ‘The dubious safety of nuclear power,’ the environment group asserted that the BNPP, a Westinghouse manufactured light water reactor, does not conform to the current safety fundamentals of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), making the inherently dangerous facility even more risky.
