Greenpeace and Iloilo residents expose illegal coal plant structure as “stupid”

Greenpeace activists protest the illegal erection of a steel structure and back-filling on a proposed site for a coal-fired power plant in Iloilo. Research shows that there are abundant sources of clean, renewable energy in the area that remains untapped. Coal plants are the largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions responsible for climate change that manifest in extreme weather events like typhoons Frank, Ondoy and Pepeng. Environmental activists take action against dumping of flood wastes and debris into Nangka River


Volunteers from Greenpeace Water Patrol, Ecowaste Coalition and Buklod Tao Kalikasan protest the illegal dumping of garbage and flood debris along the banks of Nangka River by the Marikina government and the Metro Manila Development Authority. The groups installed a banner right on the mound of wastes on the Marikina side saying “Protect our River, Stop Dumping”. Another banner that says “Ang Basurang itinapon niyo, Babalik sa inyo” was also placed above the banks that have started eroding in a matter of days on the San Mateo side because of the impeded waterflow. Greenpeace supports the global screenings of “The Age of Stupid”

Greenpeace called on world leaders to “Be smart, not stupid” as climate talks take center stage at the special session of the United Nations General Assembly on climate change in New York today. Hotels & restos join sectors urging Negros dads not to amend GMO ban

Greenpeace activists dressed as chickens circulate a petition, prepared by Greenpeace and the Hotel & Restaurants Association of Negros Occidental (HRANO), urging the Sangguniang Panlalawigan not to amend the ban on GMOs and instead work on implementing rules and regulations towards an Organic Negros Island. The petition was signed by farmers, students, business owners, workers, consumers and other citizens of Negros. HRANO, composed of all the major hotels and restaurants in the province, announced yesterday (16 Sept 09) the partnership with Greenpeace and its stand on the controversial ban.

Makati City, civil society orgs band together to urge US government to set example vs. climate change

An unprecedented global alliance of civil society organizations, trade unions, faith groups and other organizations concerned with climate change, today made its local presence known by mounting, together with the City of Makati, a bike tour for the climate. The tour ended at the US Embassy, in a symbolic bid to pressure the US to take the lead in signing a global deal during the Climate Change Summit this December, in Copenhagen, Denmark. The US, considered the highest carbon emitter in history, is expected to set an example for other countries in committing to substantial reductions in carbon emissions, and to set up a global fund for climate change mitigation and adaptation.
